First Communion Gown from Mom’s Wedding Dress

SodanoM02Jolene Sodano wanted to have her daughter’s First Communion dress designed using the remnants of her wedding dress. We had already created a christening gown for her youngest daughter from the dress.

Although there was quite a bit of material to use, we did have to augment it to get the overall look we were after. Jolene gave us a year to create this outfit. I was able to use that time to find just the right trims, laces and matching satins to get the gown that her daughter dreamed of being able to wear.

To be honest, I felt like I was shipping off a personal masterpiece.

The long gown had spaghetti straps that were covered in beads with a beaded belt.

We added a bolero jacket to conform with the Church's requirement that shoulders be covered

A simple veil with matching lace and a comb with some of the same beading as the belt

An outfit for her doll as well.

It IS a Masterpiece! You are absolutely amazing and I cannot thank you enough for the beautiful dresses you created for our daughters! I am in awe of this dress! It’s even more gorgeous in person! Thank you so much!!!  Jolene

Thought I'd share this blast from the past. A couple of year ago I made this custom doll to enter into a local competition. The rules of the competition were that we had to sew something using onlly a t-shirt, a piece of lingerie and a pillow case. I literally pulled the threads from the fabric to create her hair and she is stuffed with shredded pieces from the garments. ... See MoreSee Less

I'm really excited! Tomorrow my sister Jodie is coming to visit. We don't get to see much of each other so I'm looking forward to her visit--which means I may be distracted for a couple of days and not posting here much.

Work will still get done as I have some very talented helpers who will be working and I will be in the studio in the mornings making sure things are going forward. However, I'm planning to spend as much time with my sister as possible. Jodie is the one on the left in this picture. I'm the one in the middle. My sister Linda Jo is on the right. Our MOM made the outfits :)

Jill Maupin brought her wedding dress to us to have us make a First Communion gown for her daughter. Jill's wedding dress had some stunning bead work on it and I tried to incorporate it in a way that will work well for a 7-year-old to wear.

We also made Jill's original veil smaller. This ended up being more work than I had anticipated because we (I mean Cassie) pretty-much had to take the whole thing apart, cut it down and then re-assemble it. I was very pleased with the results thought.

In addition to the gown and veil, we made a teddy bear and a child's purse. Unfortunately, I did not get a photo of the purse.
