Patchwork Pillows Hold Memories

VarneyM Pillows01webMelody Varney also asked us to make a couple of patchwork memory pillows from her late parents’ shirts. If you are looking for a huggable keepsake from a loved one’s clothing, a patchwork pillow can not only be decorative and huggable, it is one of our least expensive options.

Janice sent most of her mother's wedding dress to have us make special Christmas ornaments from it for friends and family. The dress was made from a lovely older satin but the satin was too heavy to wrap over a foam ball like our normal ornaments so we had to come up with a different option. I chose this star option because it allowed us to hi-light the satin. We did add some lace for contrast and our own sparkle buttons at the center. The final ornaments were very elegant.

Ok, I shared my first draft dragon so it seems only fitting to share the version done for the customer. The garment was her husband's jacket. I had two fabrics to work with from the original jacket a dark blue denim and a looser wove cotton plaid.

Neither of these fabrics were ideal for this kind of detail work, but I decided the plaid would make a more interesting fabric for the main body of the dragon and the dark blue would be good accent. I made some adjustments to the original pattern to accommodate the fabrics and I'm really pleased with how this guy turned out. I had my assistant Meagan helping me on the production.

Roberta sent her wedding dress to have several gift pillows made for loved ones. Her dress had quite a bit of tulle and we tried to incorporate just a touch in the pillows by using it over the satin in a couple of places. Each pillow has just a touch of each of the primary materials from the dress.

Jama Badinghaus brought her wedding dress to us to have a christening outfit made for her daughter. Jama's dress was made for her by someone close to her and she wanted to continue the tradition of something custom made with the materials.

We chose to use the lovely satin for the bodice and put emphasis on the lace for the sleeves and skirt. These truly were lovely fabrics to work with. In the end, I decided a sash with just a dash of added sparkle would finish it off nicely. We also made a matching headband using the organza from the original bodice.
